Spring 2026 Newsletter
May 20, 2026This season at El Hogar has been marked by both quiet moments of care and long-term steps forward. In this newsletter, we share a glimpse into what it looks like to welcome a new child into the residential program and the responsibility and compassion that shape those first days. We also provide updates on the farm property and the progress of the new dental clinic, projects that reflect El Hogar’s ongoing commitment to creating stability, opportunity, and holistic support for children and families from vulnerable communities. None of this work would be possible without the steady generosity, encouragement, and partnership of supporters who continue to walk alongside the children and staff of El Hogar.
A New Beginning
One Child’s First Day at El Hogar
Welcoming a child into El Hogar is never just an arrival. At the beginning of this school year, a new child arrived at El Hogar in the late afternoon, stepping into a place that was unfamiliar in every way. The day unfolded quietly, shaped by observation, careful space from the other children, and small gestures of welcome that began to soften the uncertainty.

An Update about the Farm
For many in the El Hogar community, the farm in Talanga holds deep memories and meaning. In a letter written by Denise Vargas, Executive Director, she reflects on how years of listening, learning, and planning have helped clarify El Hogar’s vision for the future – one rooted in sustainability, strong community partnership, and lasting impact for students – and what that means for the farm property. We invite you to read the full letter to learn more about this important moment in El Hogar’s story.
Why We Visit

Sonrisas El Hogar: Project Update
As of the mid-March, the construction of Sonrisas El Hogar, El Hogar’s new community dental clinic is complete! The building is now finished with utilities in place and the space ready to receive equipment for the final setup. We are grateful to have worked with an architect and engineer who has partnered with El Hogar on past projects and supports El Hogar’s mission. He made his own contribution of plants to fill out the garden space in front of the new building. We have also received a generous donation of dental chairs from Sharing Smiles, our long-term clinic partner, and are awaiting their shipment from the United States. In the meantime, we are continuing to refine our business plan, develop marketing strategies, and plan for the transition of our existing equipment so that we can begin serving patients while preparing for the clinic’s full launch once the equipment is in place.
