Notes From Honduras – Feb ’23

February 28, 2023

New School Year

by Erika Skafel

As another school year at El Hogar gets underway, we have already been very busy!

Every February, we celebrate the anniversary of El Hogar’s founding. Our students and staff gathered for a celebration and shared reflections about the life changing work of El Hogar. The celebration also included some friendly competition with traditional games and of course cake!

On the first day of classes at our elementary school, Reverenda Patty led a morning reflection for everyone before they headed to the classrooms to meet with their teachers. Our day students were joined by their parents and our residential students were accompanied by their counselors as they all learned about their classroom rules and expectations for the year.

The first day of classes at our high school was also Valentine’s Day, so the teachers planned a day full of activities to welcome the students back to campus. Students and staff chose one word to represent their attitude and goals for the new school year to hang on the branches of a tree in front of the office: responsibility, courage, respect, excellence, growth and eat more!

We commemorated the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services at both of our campuses.

Executive Director, Denise Vargas and high school sub-Director Norma Coello represented El Hogar at the Honduran Diocesan Convention in Muchilena, Cortes.

Representing El Hogar represented El Hogar at the Honduran Diocesan Convention in Muchilena, Cortes.

Our staff invited the public health department to campus to provide check-ups, psychology and nutrition consulting, lab work and medications to all of our students.

It’s been a busy first month. We are so grateful to be able to give our students the opportunity to participate in so many enriching activities and are grateful to our El Hogar community that makes our work possible. We are looking forward to a productive school year!

Thank you for your continued support of El Hogar!
