BEGINNING OF NEW CHALLENGES

2020 was an unusual and unique year. It was a time full of challenge and learning. During this Covid-19 pandemic we have learned that we cannot control everything, we have learned how to identify opportunities in times of crisis, how to be flexible and adapt to change, how to take advantage of the now, we have learned that technology is and will be our ally. Most importantly, we have come to understand to know that empathy is essential and that a warm hug and a smile are worth a lot.

Starting in 2020, our lives took an unexpected turn, both professionally, socially and emotionally. For me professionally, since we had to face and we continue to face a new and unknown environment, it was the beginning of new challenges, of reinventing myself and putting more heart and soul into my work.

As teachers, we have considered several criteria in order to deliver meaningful learning experiences to or students. We must consider the students’ life context, we must focus on lesson planning, setting goals that benefit everyone equally and encouraging and helping students to continue with their studies.

Since they don’t all have access to the same resources, considering each student’s context was just a starting point. Some do not have a cell phone, nor money to buy internet passes. The internet signal in some places where they live is poor and in some other cases, they do not have electricity. But the students’ desire to continue with their studies overcame these challenges and they strived to complete all their assignments and to this day they continue to do so.

Once we understood each student’s conditions, planning began so that everyone could receive the same learning. The content we provided was reduced and we prioritized our topics, because we could not overload the student with a lot of content as they were adapting to the difficulties of learning from home. In addition, we taught using the WhatsApp platform because most of the student population uses this application, it’s inexpensive and easy to use.

There were several students who became discouraged due to the trials of trying to balance school, family, social and work pressure; but we sought ways to help them and they were able to achieve positive outcomes in their classes.

The Covid-19 pandemic continues in 2021 and the challenges within educational institutions are the same. This year we started classes on WhatsApp, since it is the most used application by our students. In addition, teachers are divided into two groups: Technical (carpentry, electricity and welding) and Academic (math, Spanish, social studies, science).

Between the technical and academic areas, we are given a week to send homework assignments to students, usually they are sent on Mondays. The students must work on the tasks assigned in that week, they ask the teacher when they have questions and they return their assignments with their questions resolved, on the assigned due date. There are many who are responsible with their assignments, in fact, there are several students who send them in before the stipulated time and have excellent grades. There are times when we have to be flexible because students face many different complications when sending their assignments: they get sick, their cell phone breaks, their work schedule affects their class time, among other things.

But, by the hand of God, educational authorities, teachers and students, we face the adverse situations that arise along the way, and we continue standing and moving forward with a firm step. The challenges, teachings, desire and hope for overcoming this difficult time are still latent in the heart of each student and as teachers the only thing left for us is to continue forging a better future for our students.

COMIENZO DE NUEVOS RETOS

El 2020 fue un año atípico y único. Sin embargo, fue un tiempo lleno de retos y enseñanzas. Asimismo, con esta pandemia por Covid-19 aprendimos que: no podemos controlar todo, a identificar las oportunidades en momentos de crisis, ser flexibles y adaptarnos al cambio, a aprovechar el ahora, saber que la empatía es primordial, que la tecnología es y será́ nuestra aliada y que un abrazo cálido y una sonrisa valen mucho.

A partir del año 2020 nuestras vidas dieron un giro inesperado, tanto profesional, social y emocionalmente. En lo que a mí respecta profesionalmente, fue el inicio de nuevos retos, de reinventarme y ponerle alma y corazón a mi trabajo, ya que tuvimos que enfrentarnos y acoplarnos a un ambiente nuevo y desconocido.

Como docentes, consideramos varios criterios para que los pupilos tuvieran un aprendizaje significativo: contexto del estudiante, planificación de clases trazando objetivos que beneficiaran a todos por igual, animar y ayudar a los alumnos a seguir con sus estudios. Contexto del estudiante: se tomó como punto de partida, ya que no todos contaban con las mismas condiciones: unos no tenían celular, ni dinero para comprar internet, la señal en algunos lugares donde viven es mala y otros casos no cuentan con energía eléctrica. Pero el deseo de seguir adelante con sus estudios pudo más y buscaron la manera de cómo cumplir con todos sus trabajos asignados y hasta el día de hoy lo siguen haciendo.

Planificación de clases trazando objetivos que beneficiaran a todos por igual: una vez que se conoció́ el contexto del estudiante, se empezó́ a planificar de manera que todos lograran recibir el mismo aprendizaje. También, se redujo el contenido y se tuvo que dar los temas más importantes, debido a que no podíamos cargar al estudiante con mucho contenido. Además, una de las formas más accesibles para impartir las clases fue a través de WhatsApp porque la mayoría de la población estudiantil hace uso de esta aplicación, tiene pagos baratos y es fácil de usar.

Animar y ayudar a los alumnos a seguir con sus estudios: este es un criterio importante porque hubo varios estudiantes que se desanimaron debido a la presión escolar, familiar, social y de trabajo; pero se buscó la manera cómo ayudarlos y se lograron resultados positivos. Por otra parte, la pandemia por Covid-19 sigue vigente en el año 2021 y los retos dentro de las Instituciones Educativas son los mismos. En este año empezamos las clases por WhatsApp, ya que es la aplicación de mayor uso por los estudiantes. Además, los profesores estamos divididos en dos grupos: Área técnica y Área académica, cada grupo tiene asignada una semana para enviar las tareas a los estudiantes, por lo general estas se envían los días lunes. Los pupilos deben trabajar las tareas asignadas en esa semana, le consultan dudas al profesor y las regresan ya resueltas, en la fecha que se les indica. Hay muchos que son responsables con sus tareas, de hecho, hay varios alumnos que las envían antes del tiempo estipulado y llevan notas excelentes.

También, en ocasiones hay que ser flexibles porque presentan diferentes complicaciones al momento de enviar sus asignaciones: se enferman, se les arruina el celular, el horario de trabajo les afecta, entre otras.

Pero de la mano de Dios, autoridades educativas, docentes y estudiantes, se hace frente a las situaciones adversas que se presentan en el camino y seguimos de pie y avanzando con paso firme. En conclusión, los retos, enseñanzas, deseo y esperanza de superación siguen latente en el corazón de cada estudiante y como profesores lo único que nos resta es seguir forjando un futuro mejor para nuestros pupilos.
