Annual Appeal 2021
December 6, 2021It has long been our goal at El Hogar to ensure that more and more of the leadership and management of the organization is assumed by our colleagues in Honduras. We took an important step in that direction when we hired Denise Vargas, a native-born Honduran, to be Executive Director of El Hogar Projects in late 2019.
We took another leap forward this year as El Hogar Ministries, Inc. (EHMI) the non-profit entity whose mission it is to support the work of the schools in Honduras, welcomed our first Honduran board member, Tethey Martinez.
Tethey was born and raised in Tegucigalpa. She travelled to the U.S. for her undergraduate degree in financial planning and counseling at Purdue University and earned her MBA at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Tethey then returned to her home country and began a very successful career. Today Tethey is the CEO of Ficohsa Seguros, the leading insurance company in Honduras.
Tethey first visited El Hogar over 30 years ago when she was in high school. That visit had such a profound impact on her that when Denise asked if she was interested in joining the board, she didn’t think twice about accepting. She is humbled to be a part of such a dedicated group and feels a profound sense of gratitude for the work that El Hogar does in her country.
Despite the challenges of poverty and government corruption, El Hogar is able to make such a positive impact on Honduran children who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn in a safe and loving environment.
Tethey is impressed by the thoughtfulness and diligence of the directors and the love that they lean into this organization, making difficult and important decisions on behalf of El Hogar with a high degree of organization and transparency.
We are so grateful that Tethey has invested her time and talent in our organization and so proud to have her as a member of the board that is charting the future course of El Hogar. As Tethey makes clear, there is so much potential in Honduras and so much work to be done to ensure that we continue to provide El Hogar students with the educational opportunities that will make such a difference in their lives.
As the end of 2021 quickly approaches, we hope you will consider making a generous year-end gift to El Hogar. As we all slowly emerge from the ravages of the pandemic, it is vital that we are able to continue to provide a home, an education and a future to our students.
Please give today and help us to protect, nurture and teach the wonderful children of El Hogar who are so deserving of our generosity.
With deep gratitude,
Thank you for your continued support of El Hogar!
